This illustration represents the orchid Ophrys speculum, which uses sexual deception as a reproductive strategy. Its labellum mimics the abdomen of the female wasp Dasyscolia ciliata and releases pheromones that attract males of this species.
The mimicry is so effective that, in some cases, males even attempt a complete copulation.
The aim of this illustration is to highlight the importance of species conservation in maintaining the balance and health of our planet.
Dasyscolia ciliata is the only pollinator of the orchid Ophrys speculum. Without this wasp species, this orchid would not exist. It is a clear example of how different species interact with one another, to the extent that some cannot survive without others.
