The harbor porpoise is a small cetacean belonging to the Phocoenidae family. It mainly inhabits coastal waters and continental shelves of the Northern Hemisphere, especially in regions of the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

Its body is compact and robust, with a silhouette adapted for moving through the water. It features a short, blunt snout, a characteristic that distinguishes it from many dolphins. Its back usually shows dark gray tones, while the ventral area is lighter.

One of its most recognizable features is the triangular dorsal fin, located approximately in the middle of its back.
