The gray seal is a marine mammal of the Phocidae family, characteristic of the North Atlantic coasts.

It is one of the largest seal species. It features a robust, spindle-shaped body, adapted for moving efficiently underwater. Its distinct elongated head, prominent snout, and widely separated nostrils are some of the key features that make this species easy to recognize.

The gray seal's coat displays various shades of gray, brown, and black, with spotting patterns that vary between individuals. Males tend to be larger and darker, while females generally present a lighter coloration and a more defined pattern of spots.
