Cetonia aurata, also known as the rose chafer beetle, is a beetle approximately 2 cm in length that is very common throughout Europe.
One of the most remarkable features of this species is that, unlike most beetles, it does not open its elytra to fly. Keeping its elytra completely closed and attached to its body, it unfolds its wings through specially adapted lateral openings designed for this purpose.
