Final project for the Editorial Illustration course at Penguin Random House Spain (Escuela Cursiva).
The course involved reinterpreting the cover design and character illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
After re-reading the book and creating several sketches, I decided to illustrate Alice’s transition from childhood to adulthood, which is one of the main themes of the original story.
Two identical Alices, a yin and yang representation, differentiated through flowers. To develop this concept, I researched floriography, also known as the language of flowers.
Floriography is a symbolic means of communication in which flowers are used to convey coded messages, express feelings, or discreetly send messages.
After creating numerous sketches and researching the meaning of each flower, I decided to place flowers symbolising childhood on the first part of the cover. In the central section appears the protea, a flower that represents transformation. On the other half, I included flowers associated with youthful joy, first love, and other emotions linked to this stage of life.
Through this approach, I was able to resolve the composition in a simple and poetic way, bringing together the two worlds that inspire me the most: literature and plants.
